Regional Math Discovery Teams
Problem of Practice
Every year a cohort of students around the region enters High School not quite ready to succeed in their first year math course (Algebra/Integrated Math 1).
This group is disproportionately made up of students of color, students on IEPs, and multilingual learning students. While many districts have developed intervention courses intended to meet the needs of these students, this opportunity is about exploring why this pattern persists in our system across school contexts? Are there high leverage places along students’ paths to HS where we could redesign, in order to yield more positive and equitable outcomes for all students?
Overview
A community of regional teams comprised of math educators have partnered with MCREN to explore this problem. Each participating district has assembled a group of 3-6 educators who are excited to embark on a structured discovery process to identify root causes, uncover systemic barriers, and connect with the experience of teachers and students impacted by the problem.
Throughout the year, this group will participate in small-scale tests to learn more about the problem and potential change ideas. At the end of this year, this group will produce a change package that can be shared with the region and implementation teams will be supported around the region if they would like to test a change idea.
